History of the Château

Built in the 19th century, the Château de Ferrières proudly stands amidst the rolling green landscapes of Seine-et-Marne, France, encompassing 3,000 hectares of woodlands, pastures, cultivated lands, and ecological reserves. It is considered one of the lungs of the French capital.

Originally, the Château de Ferrières belonged to the Rothschild family, as James de Rothschild, a banker and patron, acquired the estate in 1855, with the Château being inaugurated by Napoleon III in 1862. The Rothschild family had been ennobled by the Emperor of Austria in 1822, a distinction symbolized within the castle by the appearance of the initials J.R. surrounded by a crown.

Over the years, the Château de Ferrières became the venue for numerous parties and masquerade balls held in its vast halls, attracting the European elite and prestigious figures from the world of arts, politics, and nobility.

The Rothschilds transformed the Château into an architectural masterpiece, featuring remarkable elements such as sumptuous wall frescoes, richly adorned ceilings, and grand reception rooms. Its architecture combines the elegance of classical and neo-Renaissance styles. Architect Joseph Paxton, famous for designing London’s Crystal Palace, was responsible for its construction from 1855 to 1859, giving it a blend of English and Italian styles.

Eugène Lami, a French painter, watercolorist, illustrator, lithographer, costume designer, and decorator, traveled to Italy with Baroness de Rothschild to find decorations, heavily inspired by the Baroque style. The Château was fully restored in 2014 by renowned interior architect Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Today, the Château de Ferrières is a jewel of French heritage, harmoniously blending history, art, culture, and gastronomy. It hosts art exhibitions, guided tours that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the splendor of the past, as well as cultural and prestigious events for visitors from around the world.

The Château de Ferrières, a living symbol of a glorious past and a promising future, is a true icon of the French way of life.
